Memorial Scholarships
The Society is accepting essay submissions for the 2025 Marge Estilow and Dr. Florence Williams Scholarships. The Dr. Florence Williams Scholarship will be awarded to a current high school student while the Marge Estilow Scholarship will be awarded to a current college student.
The theme of the essay is "Women in the Civil War." Scholarship winners receive $250 and publication of their essays in our quarterly journal, At Home and in the Field.
All submissions for the 2025 grant must be RECEIVED by April 1, 2025.

How to Apply
Scholarship winners will be selected on the basis of an essay on “Women in the Civil War” using original research on the lives and efforts of women in the Civil War era.
Selection Criteria:
1. Written essay based on original research of women in the American Civil War.
2. Subjects may be examined from a microhistory or macrohistory level.
3. Relevance of topic to the lives and efforts of women in the Civil War era.
4. Quality of research based principally upon use of primary sources.
5. Length of essay should be not more than five pages in length, single-spaced, using Times New Roman font in 12-point size in Microsoft Word format.
** No plagiarism will be tolerated. Incidences of suspected plagiarism in submissions for the awards will be investigated by our Education Committee. Submissions found to include plagiarism will be rejected.
Most cases of plagiarism can be avoided by citing sources. SWCW recommends consulting The Chicago Style Manual for information on how to properly cite sources. The Chicago Style Manual provides examples of citations at the following link

Applicants must submit:
1. An essay of not more than five pages, single-spaced in length, using Times New Roman font in 12-point size in Microsoft Word format.
2. A bibliography of the primary and secondary sources which must use The Chicago Style Manual format.
3. A separate personal biography, of not more than one page, including age, school attending (or prospective school) and contact information.
