Rebecca Rose is a lifelong resident of Richmond , Virginia . She is married with two children. She graduated from Longwood College in Farmville ,
Virginia with a degree in Anthropology and Earth Science. Her museum training began at Hartwick College in Oneonta , New York in 1985, followed by
hands-on training while working at The Museum of the Confederacy in 1986 as a collections intern and as weekend site supervisor at the Maymont
House.
The “first half” of her career was at the Museum and White House of the Confederacy for 20 years, from 1987 during the White House restoration
project until 2007. She worked with the museum’s photographic and military collections in 1988 before focusing on the Museum’s collection of 500
flags in 1989. She was the curator of the flag collection beginning in 1991, initiated the Flag Conservation Program in 1993 and oversaw the
successful fundraising for the sponsorship and conservation of flags in the collection. In 2005, she was became the Director of Collections and
Registrar overseeing the Collections Department, managing the Collections Conservation Programs and maintaining all of the record keeping for the
museum's artifact collections.
In 2007, she started the “second half” of her career by accepting the position as Registrar at the Virginia Historical Society, and is responsible for all
loans and traveling exhibitions. She oversees flag conservation and research at the Society. Currently five flags are being conserved for the exhibition
on the Civil War Sesquicentennial beginning in 2011.
Between 2002 and 2007, she served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Women and the Civil War. She was on the conference planning
committee and began the “Regents Program” for the promotion of the Society and its annual Conference on Women and the Civil War. She has
attended the Conference on Women and the Civil War every year and was a co-presenter with Juanita Leisch in 1998 on Flag Preservation.
