Monika Elbert, Professor of English and Distinguished Scholar at Montclair State University, has published widely on Hawthorne and on
nineteenth-century American women writers in such journals as ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance, Legacy, New England
Quarterly, LIT, American Transcendental Quarterly, Women’s Studies, and in various collections. Her books include: Encoding the
Letter "A": Gender and Authority in Hawthorne's Early Fiction; an edition of The Scarlet Letter, with notes and an introduction; editor
and intro., Separate Spheres No More: Gender Convergence in American Literature, 1830-1930 ; and two editions of stories by Louisa
May Alcott, Intro. The Uncollected Stories of Louisa May Alcott and Intro., The Early Stories of Louisa May Alcott, 1852-1860. She is
currently co-editing a collection about the Peabody Sisters of Salem as well as an anthology of short stories by nineteenth-century
American women writers, tentatively entitled Emergence: Nineteenth-Century Women's Voices (Ironweed P, 2005). Elbert also serves
as Associate Editor of The Nathaniel Hawthorne Review.
