Ellen Lewis was born and raised in New Jersey, but has made the South her home for over 20 years. Her study of women's roles began when she
stumbled upon the autobiography of Belle Boyd, a Confederate spy, at a flea market. It created such an interest, that Ellen has become intrigued with
researching women of the 19th century.
With so many women’s stories to be told, her greatest satisfaction is bringing the story of these women to life. Currently, she is compiling an Honor
Roll of women of 1860-1890 who have been forgotten to history. So far, over 900 ladies and their involvement in the War Between the States has
been recorded.
Ellen has developed a Civil War persona by the name of "Miss Ellie" who is a representation of the 19th century woman and her involvement in the
war, both on the field and at the home front. Miss Ellie tells the stories of these ladies in entertaining and educational presentations, accompanied by
a traveling museum of 19th century artifacts. She has given programs all over Arkansas, as well as Arizona, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Tennessee and Oklahoma. In October 2006, Miss Ellie will offer the pre-conference presentation at the annual Networking Conference for the National
Women’s History Project in Little Rock, AR. www.nwhp.org
She is a member of the Arkansas Arts Council's Artists on Tour, Mi-America Arts Alliance, National Women’s History Project, National Registry of Living
Historians and the Society for Women in the Civil War.
A former teacher and public library manager, Ellen is the mother of five grown children and with her husband, operates an internet-based commercial
embroidery and screen-printing business, JED Products as well as Miss Ellie's Emporium, custom clothing for the reenacting Lady.
