David Coles  
David Coles
David Coles is an Assistant Professor of History in the Department of History, Political Science, and Philosophy at Longwood University
in Farmville, Virginia, where he teaches classes in the Civil War, World War II, American Military History, and the Old South.  He was
formerly supervisor with the Florida State Archives.  He has a Ph.D. in American History from Florida State University, where his major
area of study was Florida’s role in the Civil War.  Dr. Coles has authored a number of articles relating to the Civil War, has co-compiled
the six-volume Biographical Rosters of Florida’s Confederate and Union Soldiers, 1861-1865, and was associate editor of the five-
volume Encyclopedia of the American Civil War, published by ABC-CLIO.  He is completing an illustrated history of Florida in the Civil
War, to be published as part of the University of Arkansas Presses’ Portraits of Conflict series, as well as a study of Italian-Americans in
the Civil War.
