Bill Christen
Formerly an automotive engineer for General Motors for thirty-six years (retired in 2001), Bill now works as a substitute teacher (K-12)
in Michigan. He attended Kettering University (Flint) and the Center for Creative Studies (Detroit).
Bill spent more than twelve years researching the life of Pauline Cushman. This work has culminated in a biography of Cushman, "The
Spy of the Cumberland," which was published by Edinborough Press in the first quarter of 2005. Along the way he has collected
information on other actresses as well as women who dressed as men in the 1860s.
Other interests included collecting men's clothing from 1840-1880 and photographs of the last half of the nineteenth century. Other
writing projects include several Civil War regimental history topics. He is also currently transcribing the 1925-1934 diaries of Marry
Ferris and Eleanor Ferris. Mary was Pauline's sister-in-law. Eleanor was a niece. While not having any direct bearing on the Cushman
story, these diaries are fascinating glimpses of two women born in the 1800s who lived well into the twentieth century. He has been
married to fellow historian, Glenna Jo, for ten years.
