Anita Henderson
Anita L. Henderson is both a civilian and military Civil War living historian. She belongs to the Atlantic Guard Soldiers' Aid Society, an
authentic civilian living history group based out of the MidAtlantic area. She often portrays a free black woman or a houseslave who is
a cook. Her military role is that of a mounted cavalry bugler and has fallen in with several mounted units. Her portrayal of a woman as a
mounted cavalry is based on research involving Maria Lewis.
In addition to Maria Lewis, she has been doing ongoing genealogy research on her maternal GGgrandfather, Robert Eggleston, an
escaped mulatto slave who is descended from the Egglestons of VA and MS. She has made contact with two white Eggleston cousins
who have been sharing their research information with her. She is a graduate of both Wellesley College and Howard University
College of Medicine and is a practicing dermatologist in Columbia, Maryland.
