Her essay, “A Nation in Extremity: Sewing Machines and the American Civil War,” appeared in Special Textiles & the Military Issue of Textile Magazine
in Spring 2010. She has also originally presented this presentation at the Textiles and the Military Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, 2008.
Amy is pursuing her graduate studies as the recipient of the George Owen Fellowship. She also received the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum
of American History, Lemelson Center Staff Projects Grant to pursue new research regarding the importance of sewing machine use during the
American Civil War.
Her short academic career is filled with grants and prizes including:
• James Birdsall Weter Prize, Department Award for Best History Honors Thesis
• Fischer Research Grant Departmental Award for Honors Thesis research
• Undergraduate Research Quarterly Grant for exploratory research
• Summer Undergraduate Research Major Grant
• Display Award, Symposium of Undergraduate Research.
