Call for the SWCW 2010 Scholarship Entries!!!
The Society for Women and the Civil War invites you to enter its annual scholarship competition. There
will be two categories of scholarships: one for students currently attending college and one for high
school students.  Each scholarship will be for $100 with the winning essay published in our Quarterly
Journal “At Home And In The Field,” and a complimentary one year membership to the Society for
Women and the Civil War.  

The theme of the essay will be “Civil War Women in North Carolina” in keeping with the 2010 Society for
Women and the Civil War Conference to be held in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina in July 2010.  The
winners will be announced at the conference.

The Society for Women and the Civil War is dedicated to recognizing the lives and efforts of women from 1861-1865, both
Union and Confederate, showcasing original and innovative research in its conferences.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP:

Scholarship winners will be selected on the basis of an essay on “Civil War Women in North Carolina,” based on original
research, on the lives and efforts of woman in the Civil War era.  The subjects may be examined from a microhistory
perspective. The submissions will be judged on the relevance of the topic and on the quality of the research based principally
upon use of primary sources.  

Applicants must submit:

1.  An essay not more than 5 pages in length.
2.  A bibliography of the primary and secondary sources used.
3.  A personal biography, not more than 1 page, including age, school attending (or prospective school) and contact
information.
