I consider myself a serious student of women and their lives and roles in the Civil War. I research and collect (books, clothes, and photos)  to gather information, and write, give
talks, and belong to organizations like SWCW as a way of sharing the information. My books include Who Wore What, and An Introduction to Civil War Civilians. In 2007, I was
named a Fellow in the Company of Military Historians.I come from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, but live in Cuddebackville, western Orange County, New York, with my
husband, Les Jensen

Seeking information on ancestor request.  I am trying to find any information regarding a female ancestor who served as a male in the Civil War.  Her name was Mary E. Cooper of
Walker County Georgia.
Unfortunately, I don't know what name she served as and only know her year of birth (1842) and her parents' names.  Without the name she used, I have been unable to locate any
additional information.
Can you recommend any possible sources that I can pursue?

Mary Walker  was a surgeon in the union army and was captured and kept in Libby prison in Richmond, VA, I have a book written by her entitled HIT.  I am interested in sources of
information about her.

I am also interested in sources of information about women in the state of Virginia (using the after war boarders) who took steps to resist or defeat the rebellion against our U.S.
Government.
