The Society for Women and the Civil War is seeking proposals for presentations for its next conference in July 2009. Speaker honorarium includes two nights
accommodations, full conference registration, field trip and meals, a total value of approximately $500.
The Society for Women and the Civil War is dedicated to recognizing the lives and efforts of women from 1861-1865, both Union and Confederate, showcasing
original and innovative research in its conferences.
Potential presenters should submit:
1. A synopsis of the presentation, not more than 3 pages. The synopsis must include a description of visual aids that will be used to illustrate and highlight the
presentation. If you do not have a PowerPoint version of your visual aids, the Conference Committee will provide free conversion services.
2. A bibliography of the primary and secondary sources used. Our operational definitions are appended.
3. A personal vitae or biography, not more than 1 page, including contact information.
Submissions will be evaluated principally on the following criteria:
• Does the submission conform to the requested format.
• Originality of the topic. A list is provided of all past SWCW Conference Presentations. If your general topic (for example nursing practice in the Civil War) has been
featured in a past conference, please help us to understand how your work brings new information or insight into the body of knowledge of this topic.
• Relevance of the topic to the lives and efforts of women in the Civil War era.
• Quality of research based principally upon use of primary sources
• Use of appropriate visual aids.
• Anticipated interest-level in the topic.
We encourage submissions from graduate students and are particularly interested in student subjects examined from a microhistory perspective. Only presentations
based on original research will be considered for selection.
It is our intent to audio-tape your presentation and to maintain close control of an audio-tape of your presentation and a copy of your Powerpoint presentation in
electronic media. These items will be used only for the following purposes:
1. We are creating an archives of past conference presentations.
2. We are exploring the possibility of a one-time web-based broadcast of presentations as a ‘webinar’ during Women’s History Month.. Beyond this
webinar, any further broadcast of the taped presentation will be only with your express, written, consent, and under conditions in which you receive
compensation for that broadcast.
