(After-hours check-in is also available) 11am – 12noon Workshop Check-In at the Maryland Historical Society (MdHS). All workshops, welcome reception, annual meeting and keynote speaker will be held at the Maryland Historical Society located just a short drive from the college. Lunch, Dinner and transportation to/from workshops, is “on your own.” NOTE – Please turn in your Silent Auction donations Saturday morning at the registration desk at the college. 12:00noon - 3:45pm Mix-and-Match Workshop Sessions at the Maryland Historical Society (MdHS), 201 Monument Street, Baltimore, MD 21201 “Educator” Workshops are free and open to the public. Indication of attendance is required via registration form. “Historian” Workshops are free, but limited to individuals who register for the Conference on Women and the Civil War. Space at all workshops will be allocated first to those who pre-register with SWCW/MdHS for the specific workshop, in the order their registrations are received by SWCW. Tour of exhibit and story behind the exhibits. 4:00 - 6:00 Dinner on Your Own: Sample some of the best restaurants in the City near Historic Mount Vernon Square. 6:00-6:30 WELCOME RECEPTION: Welcome Reception - We will be hosting our welcome reception featuring desserts at the Mariner’s Gallery of the Maryland Historical Museum. 6:30-7:00 ANNUAL MEETING of SWCW 7-8:00 PRESENTATION "Riots To Relief & Beyond - Baltimore Women & the Civil War" by Rob Schoeberlein Setting the tone for the conference Keynote Speaker Maryland State Archivist, Dr. Rob Schoeberlein will highlight Baltimore women’s roles in the war from the riots of 1861 to the post-war memorial efforts. He will give special emphasis to the Baltimore Sanitary Fair in 1864. SATURDAY– July 30, 2011 7:30 - 9:00 Breakfast at College of Notre Dame - Breakfast buffet for all attendees. 7:30am – 8:45am Registration table open - Don’t forget to pick up your notebook and drop off your contributions for the Baltimore Fair! 9:00-noon FIELD TRIP Buses will pick us up at the college for a custom field trip to Ft. McHenry to visit the location of the incarceration of several women during the war. 12:00 – 1:00 Box Lunch Pick up a Box Lunch, relax and eat in the famed Gator Alley! 1:30 - 5:00 PRESENTATIONS: “Self Devoted Women of the North: Union Women in Maryland” by Dr. Claudia Floyd What was it like to be a Union woman in a volatile border state during the Civil War? Using the archives of the Maryland Historical Society, Dr. Floyd will guide us in examining the complicated and challenging lives of Union women in Maryland. “Southern Relief Societies” by Carol Randell, Lt Col, USAF (Ret) Discussions of Civil War aid societies often extol the immeasurable efforts of the Christian Commission, U. S. Sanitary Commission, and various Northern states aid societies. This begs the question, did not Southern ladies also join together to help provide for the needs of the soldiers? The answer is, of course they did! Come hear Ms. Randell as she shares her research on this fascinating topic. Cookie Break “Helen M. Noye – The Young Nurse” by Michael Fitzpatrick Helen M. Noye spent almost a full year as a volunteer nurse at the Naval School Hospital in Annapolis, MD as one of the youngest nurses ever to serve during the Civil War. Noye left behind a legacy of letters written to her family in Buffalo describing her feelings while working in the hospital, as well as observations on the other nurses, medical staff and the patients she treated. SUNDAY – July 31, 2010 7:30 - 8:30 Breakfast Buffett at College of Notre Dame 8:30 am -1:00 pm PRESENTATIONS “Harriett Patience Dame – Civil War Nurse” by Kim Schwatka Ms Schwatka will focus on the work of Harriet Patience Dame of New Hampshire and her experiences during the war while serving as the matron/nurse for the Second New Hampshire Infantry Regiment, and assisting the New Hampshire Soldier's Aid Society in its work. After the war, Harriet served as the third president of the Association of Army Nurses of the Civil War. “Survivors: African American Women Forge A Community” By Marva E. Belt Using slave narratives, community records and artifacts, Ms. Belt will take us into the lives of several African American women living as domestic slaves on a plantation in Northumberland County, VA to visualize their daily chores, family life and their story of survival. These women chose to stay in a Southern state to keep their family together and to forge a community where they could “keep a roof over their heads.” “A Charmed Life: The Exploits of Baltimore’s Belle Hetty Cary” by Georgia Chaney Ladd. Ms Ladd will introduce one of Maryland’s most famous Civil War inhabitants: Mrs. Hetty Cary. Using the backdrop of nineteenth-century Baltimore culture and society this presentation will reveal the myths surrounding this famous Marylander such as the arrest of Ms. Cary or the creation of the Confederate flag from her underpinnings! “The Women’s Relief Corps: Beyond the Battlefield” By Cindy Zerkowski After the Civil War, many of the relief and aid organizations that were established to assist the soldiers in the field vanished. However, the need for financial and medical relief persisted, including those widowed and orphaned continued. Ms. Zerkowski will provide an overview of how the Women’s Relief Corps (W.R.C.) grew out of the need to address these issues and how they served to support Civil War veterans.
